Water sports are popular at this beach
The lazy days of summer and fall Summer weddings and concerts are held at the city's two parks, Powerhouse Park and Seagrove Park. On the second Sunday of December, the village holds a holiday street fair while other events are scheduled at the Del Mar Recreation Center.

On January 1, hardy locals will join in the annual Penguin Plunge held on the beach in front of the Poseidon Restaurant at 11:00 am.

Hiking trails at Torrey Pines State Reserve are fun to explore and it is enjoyable to learn about the rare Torrey Pine as well as other natural phenomenon at the California State Park Ranger Station. Hot-air balloon enthusiasts can take a ride and catch a panoramic view of the county from the afternoon skies. Surfers, body surfers, snorklers, divers and swimmers revel in the pristine waters at both Del Mar and Torrey Pines Beach.
Some of the country's most prestigious horse shows are held in Del Mar from April - September. The greatly anticipated, 60th annual Del Mar National Horse Show, features North America's finest riders and horses and can be found at the Del Mar Arena from mid April through May at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The show offers some of the equestrian world's top honors along with $300,000 in total prize money. In September, the Del Mar International Horse show showcases the athletic prowess, skill and agility of some of the best hunter/jumper equestrians in the nation. The event is held at the Del Mar Arena and features an F.E.I. World Cup Qualifier event, the $35,000 Del Mar International Grand Prix. Summer is Del Mar's busiest season and kicks off with the San Diego County Fair and is always a great time of music, rides, food, crafts and shows.
In 1937, the Del Mar Race Track, was made a reality by Bing Crosby (a relative of mine) and his co-sponsor, Pat O'Brien who borrowed against their life insurance policies to raise the funds necessary to finish the track and structures. The ponies run six days a week (closed on Tuesdays) from July 18th - Sept 5, 2007. Post time is 2 pm on most days but on Fridays there is a 4 pm post time with after-race entertainment.

A couple of miles to the east are the Polo Fields which can be viewed by some of the fabulous estates in Del Mar and in Rancho Santa Fe. Visitors are welcome every Sunday, starting in April through October to view the spectacular sport of polo.

Located across the street from the Polo fields is Del Mar Horse Park. It was chosen as the site of the jumping trials to the 2000 Olympics and is a favorite spot for locals and visiting competitors to exercise their equestrian techniques.

In the village of Del Mar, galleries, boutiques, outdoor cafes and fine restaurants are favorite places to spend the day for locals as well as for visitors.
